UI-View

UI-View is an APRS® client program for Windows® PCs. Created by Roger Barker, G4IDE (SK), UI-View supports a wide range of TNC protocols, can be used as an intelligent digipeater, and, with an internet connection, as a full featured igate. At the time of his death, Roger asked that the source code for UI-View be destroyed. Since that time, the program has been in a "suspended" state, whereby no upgrades can be made to it. This has caused the installation process to be a little more involved with each new Windows version. However, with some careful reading, it is not a difficult process.

If you are installing UI-View on a PC with Vista or Windows 7, follow these directions:
http://www.wa8lmf.net/aprs/UIview_Notes.htm#VistaWin7

For WinXP and earlier machines, follow normal installation procedures.

After installation, some changes need to be made to the configuration files. The changes can be found at:
http://www.wa8lmf.net/aprs/UIview_Notes.htm#Invalid&Changed

Some items that should be changed right away:

  • APRS Server List
  • APRS Server User-Defined Filter Port 14580
  • Displayed APRS Symbol Set a.k.a "Icons"
  • APRS DESTINATION & PATH (if using with a radio)
  • UI-NWS feature requires server name change, and additional files to be downloaded. (Follow directions on the page.)

UI-View is most useful with scalable and scrollable maps. There are two ways to do this:
  • Using free maps over the internet. (Must have an internet connection.)
  • Purchase Precision Mapping Streets & Traveler 8.1. (Internet connection not needed.)

To use internet maps, download the PA7RHM Mapserver (
http://www.pa7rhm.nl) and install. You can also use this program to create static maps for use when there is no internet connection present. To do this, follow the directions here: http://www.wa8lmf.net/aprs/UIview_Notes.htm#PA7RHM

To use Streets & Traveler you must purchase the program from Undertow Software (
http://www.undertowsoftware.com/ approx. $50). You also need to download Pmap Server 7.0 (http://www.ui-view.org/uiview32/uivpmap.shtml). Before installing these programs, read the instructions here:
http://www.wa8lmf.net/aprs/pmap8_notes.htm
The first time UI-View runs after installing these programs, you may be asked to register Precision Mapping again. Just follow the on-screen prompts. You are registering the .ocx file that was part of Pmap Server.

If you use Streets & Traveler, consider installing NWSGet (
http://www.wa8lmf.net/miscinfo/NWSget_SETUP.EXE). This add-on creates an underlay to the map showing NWS radar images. Install normally and follow the directions in the help file that appears after installation. This add-on only works with Streets & Traveler.

Other add-ons for UI-View are available at
The Active Ham (go to the downloads page) and at M0CYP's addon page.
